UNM's Herrera Called Up to U.S. U20 Squad
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - University of New Mexico freshman defender Aaron Herrera has been called up to the U.S. U20 Men's National Team for three friendlies in Germany this weekend. Herrera, 18, is a native of Las Cruces, N.M., and has started all but one of UNM's games this season.
"It's quite an honor for Aaron and for our program to get called into the national team," UNM head caoch Jeremy Fishbein said. "They're going to play Germany, Scotland and Mexico. He's the type of player we're getting here."
This is not the first time a Lobo has missed time with the team after being called up for international duty. Patrick Khouri missed a few weeks while participating with Jamaica in Olympic qualifying, and Niko Hansen was invited to the U.S. College ID Camp for pre-Olympic qualifying as well.
"It's a compliment and it's great for the guys," Fishbein said, "but it's our challenge not to let that disrupt us. It's an opportunity for someone else to come in and be good and I think we'll see that on Saturday.
Herrera will miss UNM's match at No. 11 Old Dominion this Saturday and will rejoin the Lobos next Tuesday. His 810 minutes played are sixth on the team this season and lead all freshmen on the Lobos. He earned an assist on Niko Hansen's game-winning goal against Missouri State on Sept. 18.
