Thunderwolves top Rambelles, 2-0
PUEBLO, Colo. – Despite putting constant pressure on the Colorado State-Pueblo goalkeeper with 19 shots in the match, the Angelo State Rambelles fell, 2-0, to the Thunderwolves on Friday in a non-conference road match.
“It comes down to finishing and having better passes to give ourselves better shots,” ASU head coach Travis McCorkle said. “We have to get better at converting our scoring opportunities. With that many shots, we have to have a goal. Our finishing is not where it needs to be.”
The loss drops Angelo State to 1-2 on the season going into a noon game on Sunday against Adams State. The match will be played back at the Rawlings Soccer Complex on the CSU-Pueblo campus.
“I hope we compete better than we did today,” McCorkle said. “We need to get result with no excuses. Adams State will play physical and we will have to deal with that.”
Freshman goalkeeper Taylor Cardinal, who missed the Rambelles' 5-0 home opener against Texas-Permian Basin with an injury, returned to the starting lineup and played the entire match. Cardinal had six saves in the match. Lauren Carnes led the Rambelles with five shots, while Hanna Horeis and Katelyn West each had three.
“We did press and get a lot of possessions,” McCorkle said. “That is good, but we are a team that cannot allow ourselves to be satisfied by that. We have to get better results.”
Morgan Purkey scored both goals for CSU-Pueblo (2-1), while Thunderwolves goalkeeper Savannah Thompson compiled 10 saves for the win.
Sunday's game against Adams State will conclude the non-conference regular season schedule for the Rambelles. ASU opens its Lone Star Conference play at 7 p.m. on Friday at Midwestern State and then on Sunday, Sept. 18 at No. 24 Abilene Christian.
