Lexington, Ky. - The Stony Brook men's soccer team hung tough with nationally ranked and NCAA Tournament runner-up Charlotte, but the Seawolves ultimately lost a 3-0 decision to the 49ers in the opening match of the Kentucky Invitational Friday afternoon at the UK Soccer Complex.

Coach Ryan Anatol's Reaction

"I thought we started the game off slowly and were a little tentative in the first half. We had a call go against us, resulting in the penalty kick, and we didn't respond well afterwards. We were better in the second half and had the majority of the ball. We were in and around the goal much of the time, and we felt like we were getting back in the game. The second half was a much better performance than the first half, but giving up two goals in the first put us in a big hole, and you can't dig a hole like that against a good opponent and expect to come back."

Goal Recaps
  • Charlotte scored a pair of goals less than five minutes apart that gave the 49ers enough to get past the Seawolves. Tyler Gibson converted a penalty kick at 18:56. Then at 23:32, Rex Jennings took a cross from Issac Caughran and scored. Charlotte added a late goal in the 84th minute.

The Numbers Game
  • Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.) posted a shot on goal that was saved, but he did not post a point, just the second time in his last 10 matches he didn't score a goal or assist on one.
  • Carlos Villa (Caracas, Venezuela) made five saves in the net.

News & Notes
  • The match was Stony Brook's first against a nationally ranked opponent since last November's NCAA Tournament first-round match against Monmouth. It was the team's first match against a top-10 opponent since 2008.
  • This was the fourth consecutive game against an opponent that finished the 2011 season ranked in the top 100 in RPI. Stony Brook has five such games remaining on its schedule.
