‘Roos Get First Summit League Win in Thrilling Fashion
(Kansas City, Mo.) – Friday, the UMKC women’s soccer team (3-5-3) crawled back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to beat the IUPUI Jaguars (1-7-3) to earn their first Summit League win in school history.
Not only was this UMKC’s first Summit League victory, but it was their first time winning back-to-back games.
Earlier in the first half, Jaguars senior forward Megan Hock scored deep inside UMKC territory to take a 1-0 lead. Senior forward Alicia Brock was credited with the assist.
In the second half, the ‘Roos caught a break when junior midfielder Zaina Mayer was awarded a penalty kick after a foul on IUPUI. Mayer capitalized with her second of goal season to tie the game in the 58th minute.
As the half continued, both teams fought hard and the match eventually went to overtime. Coming in, UMKC held 1-1-3 record in overtime games this season.
During the 94th minute, freshman forward Cecilee Burdge broke away from the IUPUI defense and scored on only her second shot of the season to give the ‘Roos the win.
Also, keeper junior Jami Finnell did another stellar with six saves and allowing no goals after the first half score by Hock.
Coming up, the ‘Roos will look to close out the last of a three-game home stand with a win against Western Illinois on Sunday at 1:00 P.M.
