Georgia State Drops Home Opener, 2-1

<p>The Georgia State women’s soccer team lost its home opener against Jacksonville State on Sunday, 2-1.</p>

<p>The Panther offense was on full display against the Gamecocks, after being shutout at Auburn on Friday night. In the first half, the Panthers outshot the Gamecocks 10-2. Jacksonville State struck first at 17:50 on a bomb from 45 yards out by Brianna Boutzivious, getting past junior goalkeeper Rebecca Ingram. Ingram was back in the goal after making 13 saves Friday night in a 1-0 loss to Auburn.</p>

<p>Georgia State responded and finally connected by an unassisted goal from sophomore Whitney Ravan. The shot came from the left side and at a very tough angle, but Ravan put it past Jacksonville State’s goalie and tied up the game at 1-1. The score stayed the same heading into the second period.</p>

<p>Neither team could take advantage early in the second half. But with just under 10 minutes to play, Georgia State was whistled for a foul in the 18-yard box, which led to a penalty kick attempt for Jacksonville State. Courtney Hurt took the kick and put it past Ingram, the Gamecocks going up 2-1. Georgia State was unable to muster up the tying goal and dropped to 0-2 to start the season.</p>

<p>The Panthers outshot the Gamecocks 17-6 overall, and 10-3 on shots on goal. Georgia State’s next three games will be on the road before returning home on Friday, Sept. 7, for a home contest against Mercer at 4 p.m.</p>
