Cal Poly Defeats Bakersfield 5-2
BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Bakersfield rallied to tie Cal Poly at two but the Mustangs scored three goals in the final 22 minutes to defeat the Roadrunners 5-2 Sunday night in women's soccer action.
The Mustangs led 2-0 at halftime after scoring twice within a 40-second span in the first nine minutes of the match. Taylor Jordan (Sr., Tulare, Calif., Tulare-Union HS) got the 'Runners on the board when she converted an Erica Shelton (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., UC Santa Barbara) pass. Freshman Hedda Regefalk (Stockholm, Sweden, Blackebergs Gymnasium) tied the score 1:27 later when she scored off a long Taylor French (Jr., Monrovia, Calif., Maranatha HS) pass.
Elise Krieghoff, who charted Cal Poly's first goal, scored the next three for the Mustangs. At 58:33, she headed in a Lydia Anderson cross. In the 80th minute, Krieghoff redirected a Kacey Held shot and capped off the night a little under three minutes later as she put in a long ball from Cal Poly goalie Alyssa Giannetti.
"Our character was fantastic, combined from 2-0 down to tie it," said Bakersfield head coach Melissa Phillips. "We just have to find a way to settle into a rhythm and manage the game. We are still figuring ourselves out as a team and what works for us defensively and works for us in the attack."
The Roadrunners continue a homestand next Friday night when Northern Arizona comes to the Main Soccer Field for a 7 p.m. start.
