November 4, 2011
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 4 Midwestern State buried Eastern New Mexico with a pair of quick strike goals to open the second half to take a 2-1 Lone Star Conference result Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.
The Mustangs improved to 12-3-1 on the season by extending their home unbeaten streak to 40 matches dating back to the 2007 season finale.
MSU closes the regular season at home against West Texas A&M. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
"Eastern New Mexico is a very good defensive team," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "It''s a great result, but we still need to win out and take our chances."
The Mustangs drew first blood on a combination of passes from Chris Dwyer to David Freeland near the top of the box in just the second minute after intermission.
Freeland accepted the pass, put on a good shot fake and ripped his sixth goal of the season past ENMU goalkeeper Matt Malak to give MSU a 1-0 advantage.
Less than 90 seconds later, senior midfielder Dean Lovegrove ripped a shot to the upper-right corner of the net from 35 yards to give the Mustangs a commanding two-goal advantage with 42 minutes to play.
Midwestern dominated the run of play throughout the second half amassing a 13-3 shot advantage, but the Lone Star Conference Champion Greyhounds pulled within a goal on Andy Wilkinson''s unassisted tally in the 72nd minute.
Eastern New Mexico had allowed just two goals in five conference games coming into their season finale Friday night.
“we really put together maybe 70 minutes of good soccer tonight,” Elder said. “The good thing is that we created. Now, we need to finish.”
Eastern New Mexico closes the season with at 9-4-5.
